Understanding SEO

Imagine you are looking for a new pair of shoes online.

You type "Shoes" into Google and sit back and wait for the results.  Suddenly you have more than a million pages with those unique keywords.  But lets be honest.  Which page are you going to go to?  Probably the top page.  Maybe the second page?  How often would you be tempted to dig for information beyond page three or four?  Rarely.

Want to know the specific's behind Google's system of awarding page rank?  Here is a great link to an article I found online (and very recent) which breaks it all down for you (click here to view).  I'm not going to pretend to know all of it.  I don't claim to be an SEO expert as it is a mathematical and statistical field of profession that I'm not particularly interested in.

I'm a writer. I want to be paid to write.

Understand though that there is a tremendous value to building up "page rank" with Google which edges you to the top of the directory listings.  If you were that big shoe store in Toronto, you would definitely want to appear in the first 2-3 pages of Google in order to generate traffic to your website which would translate into retail sales.

SEO service providers are the magicians that make that happen.  With recent changes to Google some of the "Black Hat" and "White Hat" tricks that they used to employ to accomplish inflated page ranks no longer work.  As such SEO companies are scramblilng for content.  Unique well written original, coherent and interesting content.

Which is where we come in!

And now you know enough to be dangerous too. :)
